Each to their own
May. 30th, 2009 02:40 pmIt's funny how, to use a cliche, one man's meat is another man's poison, isn't it? A couple of things made me think this, today.
First off, I saw the start of Saturday kitchen with their whole Food Heaven, Food Hell feature. It struck me that I'd have no trouble choosing my food hell - mushrooms. I can't bear them, the taste, the smell everything. Yuk! And yet evidently the overwhelming majority of people like them a lot. Why is that, I wonder? What's different about my brain? I can't think of an unpleasant association, or anything.
Then secondly I read a post reccing a particular fic. It's an odd coincidence because it's a fic from some months ago - possibly even over a year, and yet I've seen several gushing recs for it recently. I've read it, and it really is extremely well written, I can appreciate the quality of it, but IT IS SO NOT MY SORT OF THING. The subject matter and the way it is handled, and especially the ending - which seems to be what everyone else particularly raves about - I really don't like any of it. Which is fine. Lots of other people like it a lot, but that's the point. Why is that, I wonder? Why do different people enjoy different things? There's no answer, is there? And as my mother always says, it would be boring if we were all the same.
