It's funny how, to use a cliche, one man's meat is another man's poison, isn't it? A couple of things made me think this, today.

First off, I saw the start of Saturday kitchen with their whole Food Heaven, Food Hell feature. It struck me that I'd have no trouble choosing my food hell - mushrooms. I can't bear them, the taste, the smell everything. Yuk! And yet evidently the overwhelming majority of people like them a lot. Why is that, I wonder? What's different about my brain? I can't think of an unpleasant association, or anything.

Then secondly I read a post reccing a particular fic. It's an odd coincidence because it's a fic from some months ago - possibly even over a year, and yet I've seen several gushing recs for it recently. I've read it, and it really is extremely well written, I can appreciate the quality of it, but IT IS SO NOT MY SORT OF THING. The subject matter and the way it is handled, and especially the ending - which seems to be what everyone else particularly raves about - I really don't like any of it. Which is fine. Lots of other people like it a lot, but that's the point. Why is that, I wonder? Why do different people enjoy different things? There's no answer, is there? And as my mother always says, it would be boring if we were all the same.

Food hell - most veg, especially when they are cooked! I've been watching Great British Menu and the chiefs are fixated on peas ... yuck ... pea puree, pea mousse, pea garnish, peas in just about anything. They ruin otherwise wonderful ingredients with it *laughs*

As for why some people like particular things ... I am at a loss to answer you there. It never ceases to amaze and amuse me by what some like and some hate.

I'm a bit like that with veg as well, but I will eat most things, whereas I just won't touch mushrooms - I pick them out if they're in anything I'm eating. And I agree with you about the Great British Menu - all those purees where a right pain - though at least we seem to have progressed beyond raspberry coulis with everything! I wish Tristan's ice-cream had won the dessert. He had such a cute little face! And perhaps more pertinently the ice-cream cone looked really yummy and I think would have made everyone smile.
