Went to see the new Star Trek film yesterday, with my husband and his sister. She found it very disappointing, he quite enjoyed it, I thought it was great. Which is not to say it didn't have flaws. Spoilers under the cuts.
Dr McCoy! Karl Urban, who I've never heard of before did such a great job of being deForrest Kelly. Chris Pine was good as Kirk, Simon Pegg was sooo sweet as Scottie, although I was slightly disappointed that he didn't say "You canna change the laws of physics" as there was ample opportunity for him to, or "the engines canna take it captain."
The characterisations were all really well written, the voice patterns and expressions etc I felt really reflected the original.
Spock. Both versions. I thought young Spock was better at the end, perhaps it was just that he and Kirk had settled into their proper relationship (Spock as first officer, Kirk as captain) but I wasn't madly impressed with him to start with. Speaking of the relationship between Kirk and Spock, there was one bit that just screamed Kirk/Spock at me, where they fight so that Spock resigns, and then he comes back to the bridge and Kirk slaps his shoulder. Me with a hugely inappropriate grin amid a sea of uncomprehending faces. I did wonder if the the Spock/Uhura relationship was put in just to discourage Kirk/Spock.
The plot was dire. So very thin and ridiculous, and most of all Leonard Nimoy as old Spock, not good. The whole plot seemed to have been thought up to allow LN to do a cameo and it really didn't work.
Back in the day I was never a huge fan. I liked it well enough, watched the repeats on the telly, went to see the films, but that was it. I feel a bit like that about this film, too. I enjoyed it, I'm glad I saw it, if it came on the telly I'd happily watch it again, but I didn't love it.
