The roses were on Harry’s desk when he got to work that morning. Even now he still received large numbers of Valentine’s Day presents and cards, including many lavish floral tributes. There was something about this particular bouquet, however that made it stand out from the others. Perhaps it was the complete similarity of each rose or the perfection of each just opened bloom. Or perhaps it was simply that Ministry security had intercepted all the rest. One of the admin assistants found him a vase for them and Harry got on with his work.

When he came back from lunch there was a small red gift-box waiting for him. Just like the roses there was no card attached. He lifted the lid slightly nervously and took out what he thought at first was a handkerchief. Unfolded the hanky turned out to be a very brief pair of briefs. They were white with red hearts printed on them. As he realised what they were Harry hurriedly stuffed the briefs back in the box, his face purple with embarrasment. He looked around warily but luckily it seemed none of the other junior aurors had noticed anything. Harry put the box in his drawer and tried to think of something else.

A half-hour before his shift ended Harry returned from conducting an interrogation feeling wrung out. On his desk, in the exact same spot as the earlier gifts was a large white envelope addressed to him. He wasn’t sure he was in the mood for whatever this was but opened it anyway. Inside was a greeting card. On the front was a lurid photograph of a very good looking young man wearing nothing but briefs just like those Harry had received earlier. He was sprawled on a bed that was strewn with plush red hearts and by his side was a bouquet of red roses. Harry opened the card and red confetti hearts spilled onto his lap. Inside the card was written ‘Could this be you? Meet me at Quagliani’s at 8 tonight.’ Harry smiled and picked up one of the confetti hearts. He loved Quagliani’s.

Harry looked at himself critically in his bathroom mirror. He was wearing the briefs with the hearts on. They felt strangely snug compared to the loose boxer shorts he usually wore and he wasn’t at all sure that he matched up to the man on the card.

Feeling nervous he finished dressing and Apparated to the restaurant. He began to feel a bit sick; he knew who he thought he was meeting, who he hoped he was meeting, but if he was wrong it would be extremely awkward on several levels.

“Good Evening, Mr Potter,” the headwaiter welcomed him. “Let me show you to your table, Mr Malfoy is already here.”

Harry smiled widely, a flood of relief washing over him as he followed the waiter to his table.

“Hello love,” he said warmly as his boyfriend stood up to greet him.

Draco kissed him fleetingly, tenderly. “Happy Valentine’s Day, Harry,” he said.
