What happened with Strictly?

I'm afraid I got a bit confused with the results show of Strictly last night. Whatever it was Tess and Bruce said at the beginning made no sense to me at all. Had they planned to do this all along so that they had 3 couples in the final - as they would have done if not for the John Seargent debacle, or was there really some technical hitch with the phone lines? If the former then Camilla is a much better actress than I thought or they kept it from the competitors. Wish Tom and Camilla had gone. They were quite clearly worse than the others.
