The oddest thing has just happened to me! There was a knock at the door and when I opened it there was a girl of about 18 at a guess, dressed very student-like (pigtails, boots, army overcoat, lots of black eye-liner). It transpired that she was trying to sell double glazing but when I opened the door she shied away and said "You, you're not violent are you?". To which I replied, astonished,"No. Why would I be?" but then presumably if I were violent I probably wouldn't say so.

I'm a short, fat, middle aged woman living in a very middle-class area. It's not quite like Winchester where every time someone's bag gets stolen it's written up in the Hampshire Chronicle, but nor is it Tower Hamlets. She was very young and I imagine she'd had many doors slammed in her face and I didn't have a big welcoming smile on my face but I am utterly at a loss to know what about me made her think I would be violent.

Actually I wonder what does happen to cold callers? Several years ago when my son was still young enough to have a daytime sleep I'd just got him down when similarly there was a knock at the door. There was a young man trying to sell something. I said "My son's asleep upstairs," meaning my baby is asleep so please be quiet and don't wake him but it was clear from the chap's response that he thought I meant "Sod off or my man mountain son will be down to break your arms!"

For the record I've never laid hands on anyone in violence.

How strange. Did she actually want something or was she just doing a survey on who was violent?!

And I love your description of Winchester.

She was trying to sell double glazing, she must have just thought I looked violent for some reason!

I always read the Hants Chron when I go home because it's like another world. You'd need a paper like the phone book to fit in all the muggings and car thefts around here. The letters are always a hoot as well - every summer there's someone complaining about what people are doing in the Cathedral grounds in the evenings!
