It was my son's birthday recently and he got a couple of duplicate presents, not all of which I had receipts for. I suppose the easiest thing would have been to have asked for the receipts but I am not entirely comfortable with doing that with people I don't really know - it seems so ungrateful somehow. Though having said that I wouldn't be the least offended if roles where reversed so it is completely nonsensical of me. Anyway I had a gift receipt for one thing from Woolworths and the other two are also sold in Woolies so I thought if I go in and explain maybe they'll give me a credit note. The goods are in mint condition so could be resold and I wasn't fool enough to ask for cash so I couldn't see the problem really. I have to say the bloke at the counter was extremely offensive. It wasn't so much what he said as the way he said it and - most especially - the way he looked at me. I was really angry. I actually got the same response - no dice without a receipt - at Toys R us but the whole attitude was completely different and much more helpful. This is not the first time I have had this happen. Alright shops lose a lot of money to shoplifters but not everyone is a criminal. As TRU proved it is perfectly possible to decline in a pleasant manner. I still don't really see why they wouldn't exchange the things. If I'd shop lifted them I'd already got them so they are no better off.

Also I was amused to see that my being obese is no longer my fault it is the government's fault. Hooray! Now I can blame them as I stuff doughnuts down my neck. I mean honestly what a load of bollocks! And what exactly is the government supposed to do? I know full well what I should eat it just bears very little relationship to what I want to eat and no amount of education is going to change that I'm afraid. Unless they bring in rationing for food I'm afraid we're all just going to have to take responsibility for ourselves.
