While I was away last week I got to read the paper more thoroughly than usual and there were a couple of things that caught my eye. Apparently the Enid Blyton estate have sanctioned a tv thing of the Famous Five but when they are adults, fortysomething or so. Obviously Timmy will have died but seems to have conveniently fathered a litter at some point so one of his decendants will be in on the act. I am so looking forward to this. I know that Enid Blyton is sexist and racist and snobbish but I loved those books as a nine year old and really this is just authorised fanfic.
Just before my hols there was a report about the demographics of internet use and shock, horror young women (the age bracket seemed to change each time John Humphries mentioned it) are now the biggest users of the internet. I was irritated though with the sexist comments that this got. Without exception everyone said this must be because they are all shopping. Rubbish I thought, we're all reading slashfics.
The Times was doing a series about the English language in times2 last week. It was quite fascinating. One day was a list of objects called different things in North American English compared to UK English. As this is a hobby horse of mine I read it avidly. I liked that Bowls is called Lawn Bowling in NAE but my absolute favourite was headcheese! Apparently what is called brawn over here is called headcheese in the US. It is made of brains I think so I can kind of see the logic but just imagine asking for headcheese in a shop! Finbar Saunders would go in to meltdown.
