It was the low winter sun, shining through a gap in the curtains, that woke Harry that morning. He stretched a little and glanced at the empty place beside him. He tried to remember the last time the sun had risen before him on Christmas morning. It must, he supposed, have been before James was born. Even before they knew what Christmas was, when they were too young to be so excited they couldn't sleep, all three of Harry's children had been early risers. He looked at the clock, it was 8.30, and wondered if they were up and already opening presents. Al and Lily yes, he decided. James, now nearly 15 and affecting coolness, probably not.
This year, the first since their divorce, Ginny and the children were at the Burrow. Harry began to think about all the Christmasses they had spent here, at Grimauld Place, as a proper family. Well that wasn't going to happen again in this lifetime, he thought, giving himself a mental shake. Things would have changed anyway, he reminded himself. After all he'd just been thinking about James growing up. Never-the-less he couldn't help feeling a bit low at the prospect of the day ahead of him and the sharp contrast it made to those other Christmas times.
He snuggled back under the covers and was just wondering if he could go back to sleep when the bedroom door flew open. Framed in the doorway was Draco Malfoy with a tray of breakfast things in his hands. Harry pushed himself up onto his elbows and reached for his glasses. Draco was wearing a smile and a Santa hat and as far as Harry could see, and he could see quite a lot, nothing else. Harry grinned at his lover. Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad Christmas after all.

Not very original I know but it made me smile.

Date: 2008-12-13 05:28 pm (UTC)It's been a hard week for some reason and I've found it really hard to go on the internet. Hopefully this is just a little "down" and I'll start up again pretty quickly. In some ways I'll be glad when Christmas is over.
