Andy Murray - yay!
Jun. 30th, 2009 05:52 amI admit that I gave up on Mr Murray last night. When he lost the fourth set and seemed to be struggling at the start of the fifth I thought he was giving us the classic British tennis player and going out after being in the lead. It was late (10pm is late for me) I have to be up at this ungodly hour, I went to bed fully expecting this morning to find he had lost. I thought it was ironic that, if it weren't for the roof, rain or bad light would have stopped play before he had a chance to blow it, and he could come back better today. But he DIDN'T blow it - HE WON! I think that is the crucial difference between him and former British no.1s - he wins when you think he can't, rather than the other way round.
Have to say it seems like a bit of a cheat appropriating him. I know he is British, but I bet he thinks of himself as Scottish. And let's face it, until he came on the scene, we were all waiting for the first Englishman to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry. It feels a bit like the 1994 World Cup when we all became Irish for a month!
